Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon 1.0 (Stout)
They must use coffee…. It says so on the label… Funny, it doesn’t say they use licorice root, though. Oh… it says they use Colombian coffee. That explains the lack of real “coffee” flavour—or maybe it’s the Patron XO Cafe I drank earlier messing with my tastebuds? Still, if it were billed as a “liquorish” stout, it would satisfy all mentioned parameters… I mean, that’s really what punches through in the aroma: not “licorish” candy–which is mostly star anise–but dried licorice root (a completely different plant)!
Truly, this is a wonderful stout!!! It does all the things–passes alll the tests–that make it an exemplary a stout. It is a stout for stout-lovers, AND it’s 16% ABV ta-boot! Surely, if there was ever a beer worth the microbrewer’s pricetag, this is it.
You may forget all the Irish “blarney”: Norway is where it’s at!

ps. despite Staab’s exclamation, I dunno if it’s gonna be a good spring… but after looking to the Dark Horizon, I can assure you that winter’s looking a bit brighter for sure. Thx, Dave, Chris, et.al!
Dave,
Great site and beer menu. Although I have to say (for your site viewers that haven’t been to Zeno’s before) that the bottled menu really doesn’t do justice to your selection. I love the fact that you guys have all of my favorite Trappist beers, including Westmalle and Rochefort along with some hard to find brews like Maredsous and the Dogfish 120 min. I can honestly only think of three or four bars from Toronto to Detroit to Philly that are even remotely close to your selection. I also loved the fact that you had Nugget Nectar on Cask during my last trip. I’ve never seen that before.
Brian from Erie.
